Seoye: Korean Calligraphy - Dots & Lines

Details

Sunday, Jul 26, 2026, 13:00 - 16:00

One dot for heaven. One line for earth. One line for you, standing between them.

When King Sejong designed Hangeul in 1446, he didn't just create an alphabet. He built a philosophy into every stroke, one rooted in the idea that heaven, earth, and the human being are the three forces that hold the universe together. That dot and those two lines are still in every vowel you see in Korean today. In this 3-hour workshop, you'll learn that story, grind your own ink by hand, and write your own name in that same tradition on a scroll you take home.

No experience needed. Just patience and curiosity.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

The session opens with the story; why Hangeul was built the way it was, and what a dot and a line actually carry. Then you grind your own ink. Slowly. That part matters. From there, you move through the foundational strokes of Korean calligraphy until you're ready to write your own name on a traditional hanging scroll. You leave with it.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Everything you need to practice and take something home: all brushes and tools, your own ink stone to grind, practice paper, hanji, Korean sweets and tea, and a finished hanging scroll with your name, ready to hang.
